What to Consider When Designing Your Outdoor Space

If you’re looking to add value to your home or property and enjoy the outdoors in style then we recommend spending time getting the design right. Coastal Patios is your local expert in outdoor entertaining areas and every project is custom. From the size and materials to the style and finishing touches, there is a lot to consider when embarking on a build. We asked our designers their top tips for getting it right the first time.

How Will it be Used?

The first concept to dream about is how you intend to use the space. Will it be an outdoor eating space for two? Perhaps you need a carport with room for all your tools? As well as thinking about what you want now, think about how your needs might change with time.

Having the kids round for dinner can turn into having in-laws and grandchildren round in a matter of years. You may also want to think about accessibility and whether stairs or a ramp are a more future-proof option for you. Building a space which allows for add ons or alterations in the future is always wise. If you will be selling your home in the future, building something that the majority of people will appreciate is also something to consider so your resale value increases as much as possible.

Matching Your Surroundings

When deciding on the layout, materials and style of the project, it’s important to consider your surroundings. Not only the style and materials of your home but also the natural surroundings. Using natural materials found locally will help the space to blend in over time.

We also recommend considering your neighbours or any roads nearby. If you’re planning on using your space for a hot tub, privacy is best! You’ll also want to consider where the sun rises and sets on your property and whether you want to be completely shaded or have some sun spots to enjoy.

Finishing Touches

Visualising the finished product will help create a map in your head. To avoid a large expanse of space that isn’t used, try creating zones with specific uses. Consider what areas might need good lighting and whether you will need power anywhere. Outdoor kitchens are increasingly popular and can add a lot of value to your home.
